Power of attorney (POA) is a legal document that grants another person the right to make specific decisions for you. When you give someone power of attorney, you are referred to as the “principal” since you are the one giving someone else authority over some of your affairs. The person you are authorizing to act in your place is called the “agent” or “attorney-in-fact.” Your agent or attorney-in-fact can be anyone you assign and does not have to be a lawyer.

Medical Power of Attorney

This allows you to designate an agent to make medical decisions for you when you are unable to do so for yourself. Also gives instructions as to what your wishes are for various types of medical treatment available.

The medical treatment you wish to receive in the event of a catastrophe is one of the most important and personal decisions you can make, but if you lack a medical power of attorney/living will and are in a persistent vegetative state, the burden of those decisions may be left to others like family members or even the court.
